Standard search engines accepts only 3 symbols namely colon(:), forward slash(/) and dash(-). Where as the colon(:) and forward slash(/) already exists in the http protocol. So the only recommended symbol left to use is dash(-). We all know that Blogger used to generate post URLs using dash(-) to break words. In the same way, using the (-) to break words in permalink is highly recommended and mandatory for better SEO.

Symbols Allowed In Permalink

Permalink option doesn’t allow special characters like @, #, %, &, etc. Space is also not allowed in Permalink. Only four standard symbols are allowed namely colon(:), forward slash(/), dash(-) and underscore( _ ). Even though underscore ( _ ) is also accepted in permalink option, it is highly not recommended. Using underscore in Permalink badly misguides search engines as per Matt Cutts.
It is not at all a SEO friendly symbol, So never use it.
